Thanksgiving Week

This week is a great reason to pause for the many reason's we're thankful to be Hawks.

We're grateful for a great Fall athletic season, capped by the end of Football.  The Hawks fell to the John Tyler Lions by a score of 56-42 at Midway Stadium in Waco.  Congrats to our athletes, in particular our Seniors, for a season that added pride to HHS.  Also, a major thanks to our coaches for providing the foundation for a fine season.

We're grateful for students that care for their school and others.  We've had a strong year at HHS so far, due to the positive climate built by students and teachers.  Here's an example of two of our students contributing to their greater community.

We're grateful for student accomplishments both in and out of the classroom.  Hawk Speech and Debate swept 2nd place at this weekend's tournament with 6 Top Speaker Awards.  HHS also hosted the "Geek Meet" for UIL academics this past weekend.  Many thanks to sponsors Kirsten Nash, Haley Honey, Michael Fisher, Kari Riemer, and Ryan Kubicek.

We're grateful to contribute to the future success of so many students, but we're equally grateful for the support of a community that cares about Hawk Pride.

The teachers and staff have a earned a well deserved break beginning Wednesday.  We've accomplished a good deal of work and we've got a good deal of work ahead of us.  We hope you and your family have a safe and restful break with folks you love or just really like a lot.

Breakfast with Santa on December 10th!

Click here for the flyer regarding Breakfast with Santa, a Hendrickson tradition.  Families will get to see 20 different vendors, enjoy meals, and also get to tell Santa what they want for Christmas.  This is a fun day for the family and we look forward to seeing you at HHS on Saturday the 10th!

Cross Country Triumph

Congratulations to our own Aaron Betschart for competing at the UIL State Cross Country Meet at Old Settler's Park a few Saturdays ago.  Aaron finished #22 in the 4A division for the State of Texas.  All things being relative, that places him in pretty elite territory and among the top 1% of all cross country runners in the state.  We are very proud of Aaron, as he's an excellent student, a dedicated athlete and a fine representative of Hawk Nation.  Click here for more info.

Mid-Terms

Click here for the Fall Mid-Terms Schedule

As a reminder, there are no exemptions from fall mid-terms.  The mid-term is our best diagnostic on how students are progressing in each subject.  Students absent from mid-terms due to pre-planned vacations will not be allowed to complete these exams in advance.  They will be required to finish exams upon return from holiday break after scheduling an after-school exam time with the campus.  Students absent from mid-terms will be assigned a grade of "incomplete" until the exam is completed.

Please feel free to contact your teacher, administrator, or counselor with further questions.

Late Nite Library Every Thursday

While it's taken us a little bit to get this idea off the ground, we're starting something we hope benefits our students in the long run.  On Thursdays, we're going to keep the library open from 4:20-6:20 to give students a space to get work done.  As a benefit, students can form study groups, access online resources, access library resources, and have a relatively quiet and distraction-free space to get work done.

Here are the basic guidelines to protect a study environment:

-  No "in and out" privileges.  Once you leave the library, it's time to go home.
-  Students must be in by 4:25 at the latest unless they have a teacher's time-stamped note.
-  Students must come to Late Night Library with something to work on.
-  Peer work is allowed, but volume must be kept to a "library appropriate" level.
-  School rules apply, but electronic devices/headphones are allowed.

We'll have a few teachers there to help with work.  We've asked some upperclassmen to volunteer some time to helping out underclassmen as well and hope to have them signed up soon.  Helping out at Late Night Library is a great way to get service hours that look great on a college application (HINT, HINT).  If your student would like to pick up these hours, please ask them to see Mr. Padavil or Mr. Sheneman.

Playoff and IPR Week @ HHS: 11.14.11

Progress reports are coming home this Wednesday.  Please remember that TxConnect is your most accurate snapshot into your student's grades.  If you are having any issues getting a good view into grades, let us know and we'll be happy to trouble shoot your problem.  As a reminder, teachers update grades within a week submission and Wednesdays tend to be good days to get a good view.  In the case of late work, teachers grade that work as soon as possible and the system takes about 36 hours to refresh grades after a teacher enters the revised score.

It was a jam-packed week in Hawk Country.  It seemed to have all the business of 2 weeks packed into one very eventful week at HHS.  On Tuesday, we celebrated the Regional Quarterfinal Qualifying Hawk Volleyball team with an in-school pep-rally.  It was a first-time event that got the halls rattling with school spirit.  Although the season ended that night for Volleyball, the team still deserves our congratulation for a fine season.

Wednesday, we celebrated the college signings of three of our softball players as showcased by Coach Doug Harrigan.  Courtney McCoy (Incarnate Word), Ashley Maddox (Texas Women's University), and Alexa Cunningham (UT-Tyler) are all exceptional examples of what it means to be a Hawk.  We are proud of each of them for their accomplishments both in and out of the classroom.

The Hawk Football season continues this Friday after winning the Bi-District championship game in Round 1 of the playoffs against West Mesquite.  The Hawks return to battle in Round 2 at Waco Midway at 7:30 PM against John Tyler High School.

The Theater department of HHS completed the show Paganini at this weekend.  It was an intense performance that showed off the talent of many of our Hawks.  Congrats to the players and Directors Nicole Malone and Michael Fisher for a job well done.

Busy Week at HHS (11.06.11)

Thanks to Point of Grace church for some volunteer landscaping this weekend.  A bunch of folks gave their time to pretty up the walkway at HHS.  The drought has dried up what used to be a well-landscaped entryway.  This effort to add color and life the walkway will have a nice impact on the morning arrival for many.  This is just a small shot that captures about 1/2 of their work.

The Hawk Drama departments fall comedy, Paganini, opens in the PAC this Thursday.  The show will run Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 7:00!  Tickets for students are $5 and adults are $7.  Come join the fun and support your theatre department.

Congrats also go out to the UIL Journalism team, represented by Teacher/Sponsor/Coach Kari Riemer.  2nd Place finish including two students taking 1st place.  Check out the latest issue of the school newspaper for more evidence of their hard work.  You can always see their issues on the front page of the HHS website.

The HHS Cross Country team competed at Arlington this past week in the Regional meet.  Congrats to the boys for finishing 8th of 22 teams.  Our own Aaron Betschart will be going on to the state meet this Saturday at Old Settler's Park in Round Rock.

The Football team has their playoff pairing set and will be competing this Friday at 7:00 in Waco against West Mesquite.  All of our sports teams have brought great pride to HHS this year due to their accomplishments, the leadership of the coaches, and the way our athletes carry themselves.  Hawk Pride has never been stronger.  Check out the previous post for a few more words on our volleyball team.

Lastly, we had a parent info night last week and shared lots of info about course selections for next year.  Believe it or not, students will soon be starting the process of selecting their schedule for next year.  Contact us if you have any questions.

HHS Volleyball is in the Regional Quarterfinal

The Volleyball team is soaring into unchartered territory for HHS.  This is the furthest the students have gone in the short history of our school.  The Hawks defeated Royse City in West, Texas on Friday night in 4 games.  Losing the first game, Hawks never lost their cool and stormed back to win three straight.

Congratulations to the coaches and players on a fantastic season thus far.  Your time, positive outlook, and dedication is paying off.

The Regional Quarterfinal is Tuesday night in Waco against Red Oak.  We'll be running a "fan bus" to help transport students to support our team, since it's a pretty decent drive.  Students interested will need to get a permission slip picked up, signed, and returned to the front office, along with a $5 fee.

November Begins: Hawk Updates and A Note On Grades

Two seasons had their closing regular season events.  The Hawk Band Marching season ended on Saturday with a stellar performance at the Area contest.  With the Top 4 bands proceeding to state, the Hawk Band came in 5th in Finals.  However, the band students have much to be proud of this year.  It was a highly competitive field and the students and directors put together one of the finest performances in the school's history.  Although we were just inches away from the next level, it was clearly not for a lack of effort or dedication.

The Hendrickson Football team ended the regular season with a loss to Manor at 52-49, finding themselves on the losing end of another nail-biter.  We've got a bye week and then find out playoff pairings next week.

HHS Volleyball takes on Corsicana at 5:30 in the Waco HS gym tonight (Tuesday the 1st) in Round 1 of the playoffs.  We're extremely proud of our student athletes this year and we know they will represent us well in the coming weeks.

Lastly, here's a timely reminder on grades.  This grading cycle is the student's only opportunity to balance out the semester grade.  Credits are awarded on semester basis in Pflugerville.  45% of the grade from the 1st nine weeks, 45% of the grade from the 2nd nine weeks, and 10% of the grade is the semester mid-term.  Although we provide exemptions from end of the year finals, every student takes mid-terms in their course.
