Hawk Triumphs from the Past Week

Congrats to the entire speech/debate team for their work this past weekend.  In particular, special kudos go to Lindsey Butler and Janie Townsend on their success at the Harvard University Tournament of Champions.
Members of Hawk Speech/Debate in Cambridge at the Harvard Tournament
Lindsey advanced to the octafinal round in Extemporaneous Speaking and Janie advanced to the double-octafinal round in Dramatic Interpretation.  Advancing to outrounds at this tournament is a huge accomplishment; the total number of competitors in each event was over 300 of the best students in the nation.

Softball lost to Elgin on Tuesday, but bounced back to join Baseball and Girls Soccer on Friday by sweeping home victories in all the events.  It was a busy Friday night at HHS, but a good reminder that our spring sports are on their way to outstanding finishes.

Speaking of outstanding finishes, we had three State Finalists represent Hendrickson this weekend.  Kierra Boyce finished 4th in the state in wrestling while Aaron Overheim finished 10th in 200 Freestyle and 7th in the 500 Freestyle.  Congrats to both and know we are busy planning a way to celebrate all these notable achievements at HHS very soon.

Choir in DC

Many members of the HHS Hawk Chorale spent the weekend in Washington DC to perform at the Kennedy Center for a crowd of 800, including members of the 1st family.  It was a memorable experience for all of them.  They had the opportunity to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, sing at a Military Retirement Ceremony, visit Mt. Vernon and sing at the Lincoln Memorial.

Rotary Interact at HHS

The Hendrickson HS Interact Club charter presentation took place on Wednesday, Feb. 15th at the Falcon Pointe Country Club in Pflugerville. Interact is Rotary International’s service club for young people ages 12 to 18. Interact clubs are sponsored by individual Rotary clubs, which provide support and guidance, but they are self-governing and self-supporting. Currently, Hendrickson High School has 60 Interact members.

Each year, Interact clubs complete at least two community service projects, one of which furthers international understanding and goodwill. Through these efforts, Interactors develop a network of friendships with local and overseas clubs and learn the importance of
  • Developing leadership skills and personal integrity
  • Demonstrating helpfulness and respect for others
  • Understanding the value of individual responsibility and hard work
  • Advancing international understanding and goodwill

State Bound Hawks!

We've got some pretty exciting news in the world of Hawk Athletics.

Kierra Boyce and Andrey Diaz took 1st and 2nd repectively at the Regional Wrestling meet.  Both young ladies will be advancing to the state tournament.

Swimmer Aaron Overheim has qualified for the state swim meet in the 200 and 500 Freestyle.

Congrats to these three students for this incredible accomplishment.

Speech/Debate Triumphs (again)

HHS Students competed yesterday in the UIL CX District meet hosted here at Hendrickson.  Our teams swept the top three district spots.  Individual Results are as follows:

Co-Champions:  Maggie Solice / Andrew Barron and Travis Tiffany / Peter Wood
3rd Place:  Pedro Segura / Samantha Hentosh

The teams of Maggie/Andrew and Travis/Peter will represent Hendrickson and our district at the UIL State CX meet on March 16-17 at UT.

Also, congrats to HHS Speech/Debate Sponsor Kirsten Nash.  She has earned the distinction of "First Diamond Coach" by the National Forensic League.  This is quite an honor in the speech/debate world, a part of which is growing rapidly at Hendrickson.

Teen Dating Violence Week

As the father of two, one being a girl, I'm not particularly excited about the idea of students "dating."  Frankly, when it comes to "dating," my view is that it should not be allowed until the teen years are over.  Unfortunately, the rest of the world does not necessarily share my view on that...and I doubt my kids will either.

In order to help promote the idea of healthy relationships, all PISD high schools are promoting "Teen Dating Violence Awareness Week."  The message of this week is essentially that students should not be in relationships that are controlling, harmful, or demeaning.

Here is a video made by one of our own students this week.

You can also go to http://www.loveisrespect.org/ for more info and resources behind this week.

Wednesday night at PHS Fine Arts Center from 7-8:30, there will be a community event to share student products, enjoy the good company of others, and distribute resources/information.

Tables are set up at all lunches to promote the week and distribute information.

HHS Teacher/Humanitarian of the Year

Each year, HHS awards two awards to honor their exemplary service to Hendrickson students and staff.  The Teacher of the Year is the individual that puts in the kind of effort and dedication that results in an outstanding learning environment while being a top-notch "team player."  This year's Teacher of the Year is Chemistry Instructor Lymari Hazen.

The Humanitarian of the Year is the individual committed to serving others through all their words and actions.  The HHS Humanitarian of the Year is Ms. Valorie Carson.  Congrats to both of these deserving educators!

February Updates

If you were around the campus on Friday around 8PM, you would have seen the faculty and student parking lots completely packed.  It was surreal to see the school that full during such a late hour, but it was a good reminder of how active our students/parents are within our school.  There was a basketball game vs. Cedar Ridge, Girls Soccer vs. Connally (an 6-0 win), and the Fine Arts production of Hairspray.

If you got to make it out to Hairspray, I'm sure you were as impressed as I was.  Directors Michael Fisher, Nicole Malone (along with the help of teachers Haley Honey, David Duffy, and Eddie Lopez) turned out an amazing performance with a huge crew and cast.  It is just another reason we are proud to call ourselves Hawks.  Check out the video and a couple of other scenes from this week.

Signing Day Highlights

Signing day is a national event where student-athletes sign scholarship papers to play for colleges and universities. This year, we had several students sign to play for many great schools. In addition to being strong athletes, we are proud of these students because they are great representatives of HHS. In these pictures, you see students that take Advanced Placement classes, belong to service organizations, work hard in the classroom, and contribute to a positive atmosphere at HHS. Congratulations to the Hawks in the events this past week.
